I decided to try henna in a cream form after trying the powder a few times and being completely fed up with the mess and the smell and the inability to control the color results – I’m a natural redhead and was looking to dye my hair a dark auburn color. I knew I didn’t want to use conventional dyes – I have very curly hair, which means it’s very dry and easily damaged. I knew that a permanent dye off the drugstore shelf would do horrible things to my hair even if the color was nice. After some research I tried powder henna and mixed it with some coffee grounds and a couple other things that were supposed to change the color from the standard henna orangey brown. My hair turned out the standard henna color. Next time around I mixed the henna with a couple other things that again were supposed to change the color and got the exact same shade. So despite warnings that places that sold different color dyes were using ingredients other than straight henna, I tried Surya henna cream in copper mixed with golden brown. My hair is very long and pretty thick, so I need at least 2 boxes of it to dye my hair. I ended up with a beautiful, rich auburn color and no mess (cleaning green gritty goop out of the bathtub was one of my least favorite parts of henna-ing my hair with the powder). Surya still won’t lighten hair – its ingredients are much better for hair than the ammonia in most commercial permanent dyes. However, you should NOT henna your hair if you have dyed your hair with a dye containing ammonia; it will do truly horrific things to your hair.

I used this product on my hair in January. It turned a ghastly shade of orange and would NOT come out. My hair is still red after using color stripper and putting other colors over the henna (after going through a tortuous procedure of mineral oil and alcohol all over my head). Despite how it is advertised, this is NOT a temporary color. When I went to a salon and told them what I had done, they basically laughed at me and refused to touch my hair other than to cut it. If you want to color with something temporary, steer clear of this product

This hair color is *great* – but there are a few things you should know before using it:

    - This is listed as a non-permanent color, but even after it has been washed and allowed to fade, your hair will still be very red (especially if you have light7grey hair.) I have blond hair and after coloring with this product, even months later without re-application, my hair is still red (though not as vibrant.)

    - It makes a very natural-looking red! Unlike most permanent hair colors, the base colors of this are orange and gold, not red or purple. Also worth noting is that it will give your hair a very shiny, healthy glow that looks radiant in the sun. The cream also smells very herbal-y and yummy.

    - Being henna, it will stain your skin! However, the stains are very faint and exfoliate off in about a day. I have excellent results using with hazel to clean off the stains around my hairline after I have washed the color out, it seems to make them fade even quicker. It doesn’t turn your scalp bright orange…and the stains are more of just a shade or two darker than your skin tone.

    - Anyone who has colored their hair red knows that it is the hardest color to keep, it’s notorious for fading and washing out! I recommend using a hair cream with sunscreen to keep the color from fading in the sun, and a color-saving shampoo. I use Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Crème 4 oz. and Rusk Sensories Brilliance Grapefruit & Honey Color Protect Shampoo, 13.5-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 3) (both smell great!) and they keep my color better than anything else I’ve ever used.

    Hope this helps!
